Mr. Larry Rudnicki

Athletic Director

We’re building a “culture of athletic excellence” at St. Michael Academy!

Through year-round opportunities to train and compete in a variety of sports, we’re increasing strength and fitness while instilling essential Christian virtues. We believe Athletics, properly and vigorously pursued, meshes seamlessly with our mission at SMA!

At SMA, our coaches are considered teachers, and for many students the life lessons of Athletics, such as teamwork, fair-play, and perseverance in the face of adversity, have more immediate relevance than the more abstract insights of the classroom.  As with all fields of endeavor, we strive to place Athletics in its proper context, resisting the contemporary impulse to worship at the altar of “Ball.”

We strive to model the fortitude of the saints and martyrs who endured trials and tribulations on behalf of the Gospel.  We embrace Paul’s words (from 2 Timothy 4:7) that life is essentially an endurance contest: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Our Boys Cross Country team just completed another excellent season in 2020, winning the first Regional Championship in school history and finishing 9th at the Division 4 State Championship – its second consecutive Top 10 finish!  The team also recorded wins at Rudyard and its pre-Regional, and was runner-up at Webberville and in the Small School division at Shepherd.  The Boys XC team has developed into a championship program and is leading our Athletic Department forward!

We celebrated the return of Girls Volleyball to SMA this past fall!  Veteran Coach David Peck led our team in its successful, inaugural campaign!

Our Boys Basketball team has, unfortunately, had to cancel its 2020-21 season due to Covid-related facility closures.  We plan to resume our program for the 2021-22 season.  Even so, we are in the process of forming a Girls Basketball team – stay tuned!

Our (Co-ed) Alpine Skiing program at SMA is tearing up the slopes!   The teams (both High School & Middle School) practice at Nubs Nob under the tutelage of experienced coaches, led by David Kolka!

Our Boys & Girls Track and Field teams will look to regroup this spring following the cancelled 2020 season.  We’ll build upon our successful first season in 2019, aiming to send more athletes to the State Finals, while initiating our Junior High Track Club!

We’re also planning to launch a Golf program at the Junior High level, for both Boys & Girls, this spring!

Our Athletic Co-ops are successful and expanding! SMA students participate with:

  • Hockey & Lacrosse at Petoskey HS
  • Baseball & Softball at Harbor Light Christian
  • Girls Tennis at Harbor Springs HS

More Athletic Co-ops are in the discussion stages – we welcome your input!
