Boys Cross Country - Fifth Place at the State Finals!
Coach Whitmore Interviews Hillsdale Football Superstar Trey Brock!
Check out Coach Whitmore and his former Hillsdale teammate, NCAA Division-2 All-American Wide Receiver Trey Brock, as they discuss football, formation, friendship, Classical education, and living out their Catholic Faith in an often-hostile culture!
We’re building a “culture of athletic excellence” at St. Michael Academy!
Through year-round opportunities to train and compete in a variety of sports, we’re increasing strength and fitness while instilling essential Christian virtues. We believe Athletics, properly and vigorously pursued, meshes seamlessly with our mission at SMA!
At SMA, our coaches are considered teachers, and for many students the life lessons of Athletics, such as teamwork, fair-play, and perseverance in the face of adversity, have more immediate relevance than the more abstract insights of the classroom. As with all fields of endeavor, we strive to place Athletics in its proper context, resisting the contemporary impulse to worship at the altar of “Ball.”
We strive to model the fortitude of the saints and martyrs who endured trials and tribulations on behalf of the Gospel. We embrace Paul’s words (from 2 Timothy 4:7) that life is essentially an endurance contest: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Our Boys Cross Country team had a spectacular 2019 season, finishing 5th at the Division 4 State Championship! The team recorded its first ever invitational wins, taking firsts at Cheboygan, in the small-school division at Mackinaw City, and at Ogemaw Heights – while also placing a close second at its Regional. With maturity, dedication, and leadership, the Boys XC team has poured the foundation for a championship program and is leading our Athletic Department forward! We’ll aim for still greater heights in 2020, while expanding our Junior High XC Club!
Our Boys Basketball team just finished its second year of primarily Varsity competition, demonstrating steady improvement through its dedication and tenacious work ethic! We invite you to join us for our home games next season at Petoskey’s classic gymnasium at Central Elementary School!
Our Boys & Girls Track teams will look to regroup next spring following the cancelled 2020 season. We’ll build upon our successful first season in 2019, aiming to send more athletes to the State Finals, while initiating our Junior High Track Club!
We’re making plans to resume our Volleyball program this fall and to launch a Girls Basketball team this winter, while also exploring the possibilities of starting Ski & Golf programs for the 2020-21 academic year!
Our Athletic Co-ops are successful and expanding! SMA students participate with:
- Hockey & Lacrosse at Petoskey HS
- Baseball & Softball at Harbor Light HS
- Girls Tennis at Harbor Springs HS
More Athletic Co-ops are planned – we welcome your input!
