The Robotics Club at St. Michael Academy launched in September 2019, focused on designing and building underwater remote operating vehicles (ROV).  Team members will gain skills in project management, teamwork, problem solving, innovation, construction techniques, and engineering discipline (design, build, test).

The 5-member SMA team has already built and tested two underwater ROVs and is now constructing an underwater obstacle course in preparation for the Seaperch regional competition at the University of Michigan in March 2020.

In January, the team plans to begin constructing a more advanced ROV, to be entered in the MATE competition which will be held in Alpena in May 2020.

The club currently meets Monday and Friday mornings from 7:00 to 7:45 am at SMA.  In-water testing and practices are held at the Charlevoix Area Community Pool, to which we are grateful for their providing pool time to us, on Sundays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

Seaperch is sponsored by the U.S. Navy. (

MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) is primarily sponsored by the MATE Center at Monterey Peninsula College with funding and support provided by the NOAA. (
