St. Michael Academy Announces $100,000 “Matching Funds Challenge” to Boost Year-End Fundraising Campaign

PETOSKEY – December 4, 2019 – St. Michael Academy (SMA), Northern Michigan’s only Classical Catholic high school, announced today that it has received a commitment from an anonymous donor to match pledges up to a total of $100,000. New gifts, new Guardians Club memberships, and increases in existing Guardians Club member pledges received by year-end 2019 will qualify for the matching funds.

“The 2018-19 academic year marked a major turning point for SMA,” noted John Birney, President of the SMA Board of Directors. “We’ve subsequently doubled enrollment, reached new levels in academic and athletic achievement, and forged strong new relationships within the community. SMA has never been stronger – and with this new source of funding, we can take our Classical Catholic high school to still greater heights.”

SMA also announced today the establishment of its first named scholarship, the Emily Hoffman Memorial Scholarship Fund,in honor of Emily Hoffman, daughter of Fred and Pat Hoffman.

Emily enjoyed many activities as a young lady, especially 4-H. One of Emily’s strongest supporters in 4-H was Mary Carpenter, who regularly sponsored her endeavors, leading to the development of a special bond which led Mary, upon her own passing, to bequeath a generous sum to the Scholarship Fund.

The Hoffmans are pleased to sponsor this new $2,500 scholarship, to be awarded annually, helping SMA students grow in their Catholic faith, and in knowledge of the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. Pat Hoffman stated, “Establishing a scholarship at St. Michael Academy has been very fulfilling. We are grateful to be able to honor our beloved Emily’s memory in such a worthwhile way.”

SMA is enrolling students for the winter semester. Please contact Headmaster Dr. Richard Brake at 231-881-9025 for more information or to schedule a shadow day or tour. SMA offers tuition assistance to qualifying families. No student is denied enrollment because of financial reasons.
