PETOSKEY – October 30, 2019 – St. Michael Academy (SMA), Northern Michigan’s only Classical Catholic high school, announced today that its Boys Cross Country (XC) team placed second at last weekend’s Division 4 Regional, qualifying for the XC State Finals this coming weekend.

The 7th ranked Guardians placed four runners in the Top 10 at the 17-school race, scoring just 49 points, falling only to 2nd ranked East Jordan’s 39-point score.  All other teams scored more than 100 points.

The Boys XC team will be the first to represent SMA at the State Finals of any sport.

SMA Headmaster Dr. Richard Brake stated, “I love David and Goliath stories, and our Boys XC team certainly reflects that underdog fighting spirit.  I don’t know that we’re the smallest school ever to be Regional Runners-up, but regardless, our young men personify that guardian ethos of our patron, St. Michael, to whom we pray to ‘defend us in battle.’  Now it’s on to the State Finals where our guys hope to ‘shock the world’ one more time!”

SMA Athletic Director and Head Cross Country Coach Larry Rudnicki added, “We are extremely proud of our Boys XC team. They ‘bought in’ to a demanding, long-term training process and are now reaping the benefits of their dedication and hard work.  We challenged them and they responded.  As we develop a culture of excellence at SMA, we strive to use Athletics as a means of developing Christian virtue and strong character.  With teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance through adversity, our Boys XC team is leading the way!”

The XC State Finals are this Saturday, November 2, at Michigan International Speedway, near Brooklyn. The Division 4 Boys race is scheduled for 10:50am.

This Friday, November 1, at 7:00pm, SMA presents Rusty Reno, Editor of First Things magazine, who will speak on “The Virtues of Classical Education.”  SMA is located at 2225 Summit Park Drive, near the intersection of Mitchell and Division streets, just east of Petoskey. The event is free and open to the public.
