PETOSKEY – September 4, 2020 – St. Michael Academy (SMA), Northern Michigan’s only Classical Catholic high school, is pleased to announce the resounding success of its inaugural True-Good-Beautiful Golf Invitational held last month at True North Golf Club, north of Harbor Springs.

The SMA leadership team expresses its gratitude to everyone who contributed to this blessed, fun-filled event, especially the leaders of its planning and execution, St. Michael Foundation Executive Director, Marie Law, and True North Director of Golf, Michael Kernicki.  Thanks also to Michael Patrick Shiels for broadcasting “Michigan’s Big Show” (heard locally on 103.3 FM & 1270 AM) live from True North.

SMA Headmaster Dr. Richard Brake stated, “We’re deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this event a huge success, benefitting Catholic education!  We’re also pleased to strengthen our relationship with the outstanding team at True North and to generate momentum for our Golf program which will debut our first-ever SMA team in the spring.  We look forward to making this an annual summer event!”

SMA students and parents, along with the staff at True North, hosted eleven foursomes at the event, which raised $17,000 in support of Catholic education at SMA.  The winning “Boyd Watterson” team was comprised of Charlie Licata (who had the lowest individual score of the day), Michael Lucci, John Smock, and Travis VanTighem.  Barb Young had the lowest individual score among the lady golfers.

Planning for the Second Annual True-Good-Beautiful Golf Invitational is underway with a date announcement forthcoming as soon as possible.  To reserve an individual or foursome spot at next summer’s event, please contact Marie Law at marie@stmichaelpetoskey.org.

Earlier this month, SMA released its Re-Opening Plan for the 2020-21 school year which features a commitment to remaining open for on-site learning and formation, whenever possible, five days per week.  A news release regarding the Plan, along with the full document and much more additional information regarding SMA, can be viewed on the school website at https://stmichaelupnorth.org.

SMA is enrolling 7th through 12th grade students for the 2020-21 academic year.  Please contact Dr. Brake at drbrake@stmichaelpetoskey.org for more information.  SMA offers tuition assistance to qualifying families.  No student is denied enrollment because of financial reasons.

Established in 2013, St. Michael Academy is the first Catholic high school in the Little Traverse area since 1972, and the region’s only Classical high school.  SMA strives to develop the next generation of American leaders by promoting a culture of excellence and instilling its students with the classical virtues of wisdom, temperance, courage, and justice, along with the Christian virtues of faith, hope, and love.
