St. Michael Academy Welcomes Four New Teachers to Its Staff

PETOSKEY, MI, August 08, 2018 == St. Michael Academy (“SMA”), Northern Michigan’s only Classical Catholic high school, announced today that four new teachers have joined the SMA staff for the 2018-19 School Year. SMA is very pleased to welcome Dr. Mary Sims, Ms. Cora Lynn Rogers, Ms. Colleen Mikelson, and Mr. Shea Whitmore.

SMA Principal Dr. Richard Brake stated, “Our momentum continues to build as a premier Catholic high school, as further evidenced by the addition of these highly-qualified teachers to our outstanding faculty. All four have a strong command of their respective disciplines and are passionate about their faith. Together, we will provide a comprehensive Classical Catholic education to our students, preparing each for a life of devout leadership through the relentless pursuit of excellence and the development of the whole person.”

Dr. Sims will join SMA as a part-time teacher of Theology and Philosophy and as a College Advisor. She will also initiate a Drama program at SMA. She is a retired U.S. Navy Commander with 24 years of experience as a Surface Warfare Officer. Dr. Sims earned her Ph.D. in Organization and Management from Capella University. She also holds an M.A. from the Naval Postgraduate School where she is currently the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.

Ms. Rogers will join SMA as a full-time Mathematics teacher. For the past four years, she taught Mathematics at the Uncommon Charter High School in Brooklyn, New York. She holds an M.A. in Mathematics Education from the Teachers College at Columbia University, a B.S. in Education from Central Michigan University, and an Associate of Arts degree from North Central Michigan College. Ms. Rogers is a graduate of Petoskey High School and has returned to her hometown to be close to family.

Ms. Mikelson will join SMA as a full-time Science teacher. For the past two years, she was a Researcher and Laboratory Manager at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham. Prior to that, she taught high school and college Biology courses in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Ms. Mikelson holds an M.A. in Environmental Science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a B.A. in both Environmental Science and Chemistry from Northern Michigan University.

Mr. Whitmore will join SMA as a part-time Latin and English teacher. He is a recent Magna Cum Laude graduate of Hillsdale College where he earned his B.A. in Greek and Latin while also playing linebacker on the Hillsdale football team. In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Whitmore will also join the SMA Athletic program as an Assistant Basketball Coach, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Head Golf Coach. He is a graduate of Petoskey High School and looks forward to applying his wide-ranging skill set here in his hometown.

Since opening in 2013, SMA is the first Catholic high school in the Little Traverse area since 1972, and Northern Michigan’s only high school offering a Classical Curriculum. SMA strives to develop the whole person, cultivating academic, moral, and all-around excellence in its students, from within a caring and attentive environment. SMA is accepting students for enrollment in the fall semester.
